Alternative Program for the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway

The Nobel peace prize ceremony will take place with an empty chair. The Nobel Committee will proceed with their official program as usual. Mrs Chungdak Koren will represent the Norwegian Tibet Committee at the official ceremony and dinner banquet on December 10 and also at the Nobel Peace concert on 11.

Norwegian NGOs and Tibetans and support group will join with Amnesty Norway to celebrate The Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo. Following is the program:

Amnesty International in cooperation with several other organisations will focus on Human Rights in China and the Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo.
Demonstration on 9th December, 3pm, outside the Chinese Embassy in Tuengen Allé 2B. The banners will read “Free Liu Xiaobo!” and “Free all prisoners of conscience in China!”. The Embassy will receive tens of thousands of signatures from Amnesty International’s petition for Liu Xiaobo, collected in Norway as well as internationally.

Breakfast Seminar (organisers: PEN International and Amnesty International) on 10th December 9-10 am on Amnesty’s premises in Grensen 3, third floor.
Key-note speakers followed by plenary discussions. The seminar is open to the press and the public.

Mr. Salil Shetty, the international Secretary General of Amnesty International, on Human Rights in China and the role of activists.

Ms. Martin-Liao Tienchi, President of Independent Chinese PEN Centre, on Liu Xiaobo and Charter 08

Mr. Yu Zhang, Executive Secretary of Independent Chinese PEN Centre, on freedom of speech

Mr. John Ralston Saul, President of PEN International, on the role of the writers.

Mr. Lee Cheuk Yan, Secretary General of Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions, on economic growth versus respect for Human Rights in China

Chair: John Peder Egenæs, Secretary General of Amnesty International Norway.

Torch Parade for Liu Xiaobo, 10th December, 6pm.

The torch parade will start at Youngstorget and stop outside Grand Hotel, where a picture of Liu Xiaobo will be projected unto the hotel’s facade to mark the absence of the Nobel PeacePrize Winner. Read more about the torch parade here.
